ངང་དུ་ - while, within, during

ངང་དུ་ ngang du is another common construct you could see in texts, especially སྒྲུབ་ཐབས་ sgrub thabs material. It has many translations, while, during, in/within the state, in the condition of

ངང་ itself means state or condition and the དུ་ particle is a dative-locative particle (in, as, -ly, at, many). So the reading means in or into a state or condition -- to rest in a defined state.

 Case examples:

ཟབ་ཞི་སྤྲོས་བྲལ་ངང་དུབཞག

zab shyi trödral ngang du shyak

And I rest in a state of profound peace beyond complexity. The last word is of course a verb, བཞག , remain or rest here. ཟབ་ཞི་སྤྲོས་བྲལ་ is the state, or profound peace beyond complexity.

Another typical statement is to dissolve into something:

རིས་མེད་སྟོང་གསལ་ངང་དུཐིམ། །

rimé tong sal ngang du tim

And dissolves within the empty clarity beyond limits. The last word, ཐིམ་ , is the verb to dissolve. As the particles in Tibetan point backward instead of forward, we have  <- into dissolve where the left side is what it is dissolved into.

As seen in both cases, usually  ངང་དུ་  is in front of a verb and what this construct is operating with is to the left.

More examples:

གསལ་སྟོང་མཉམ་གནས་ཆེན་པོའི་ངང་དུ་གསལ༔

saltong nyam né chenpö ngang du sal

Visualized vivid and distinct, in the great equality of clarity and emptines

གཏོར་མ་འདི་ཁྱེར་མཐའ་བྲལ་ངང་དུ་དེངས། །

torma di khyer tadral ngang du deng

Take this torma, and vanish into the realm beyond all extremes.

འཁོར་གསུམ་ཡེ་ཀློང་ངང་དུ་མཚམས་བཅད་དོ། །

khor sum yé long ngang du tsam ché do

The primordial expanse beyond the three spheres, the boundary is set!

བདག་མདུན་འོད་གསལ་ངང་དུ་ཐིམ

dag dun ö sel ngang du thim

one dissolves into that luminous state in front.

I pray that you may remain in the state beyond birth and death.

སྡིག་ལྟུང་སྐྱེ་མེད་ངང་དུ་བཤགས། །

དེ་ནས་དེ་ཉིད་ཀྱི་ངང་དུ་ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེན་པོ་ལྷན་གྱིས་མཉམ་པར་བཞག་རྗེས་དེར་དགེ་བའི་རྩ་བ་བསྔོ་བ་བྱ།

Then, remain within that state equanimously in mahamudra. Afterwards, within that, you have to dedicate the root of virtue.

དྲན་རྟོག་ཐུགས་ཀྱི་ངང་དུསྨིན། །

dren tok tuk kyi ngang du min

May all memories and thought mature within the deity’s wisdom mind;
