སྐུ་ sku - body, honorific

The Tibetan language has honorific words when referring to or addressing someone who is considered to be in a higher position, such as a teacher parent, or to be polite when addressing someone. For oneself or for others who are family, an intimate, or children, the non-honorific word is used. Or when in doubt, use the honorific word.

A common honorific word encountered a lot is སྐུ་ sku (Sanskrit kāya) or body, were the non-honorific word is ལུས་ lus, or གཟུགས་ gsugs. 

For example སྐུ་ཁམས་ sku khams means health. སྐུ་འདྲ་ sku 'drang means holy image, or statue where འདྲ་ means similar.  སྐུ་ཐང་ sku thang is thanka, or a painting.

སྐུ་གསུམ་ sku gsum is a common words, means the three bodies of a buddha (dharmakaya, nirmanakaya, sambhogakaya). སྐུ་གདུང་ sku gdung means relics, or body remains (གདུང་) of a holy body. There's more about buddha's bodies but that's for a future article.

A common expression you will find is སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས་ sku gsung thugs, body, speech, and mind, in most cases specifying the enlightened body, speech and mind, sometimes also translated as the exalted body, speech and mind, or Buddha's body, speech and mind.

ཁྱེད་རང་སྐུ་གཟུགས་བདེ་པོ་ཡིན་པས། is a very common greeting expression in Tibetan, or 'how are you?' but literally it means 'how is your body (how is your health)? The answer if Ok is  ང་བདེ་པོ་ཡིན། - I'm fine).

བླ་མའི་སྐུ་ཚེ་བརྟན་པ་དང༌། །

Grant your blessings so that the life of the teacher may be secure,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་ཐུབ་པ་ཆེ། །

Is my own root guru in the form of the great nirmāṇakāya Sage.

ཐུབ་དབང་སྐུ་ཡི་འོད་ཟེར་ཕུང་པོ་ལས། །

A mass of light rays emanates from the body of the Lord of Sages,

སངས་རྒྱས་ཀུན་གྱི་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྐུ་འཆང་བ། །

He possesses the wisdom kāya of all the buddhas

སྐུ་ཡི་དམ་ཚིག་ཉམས་པ་རྣམས༔

All these impairments of the samaya of the body,

སྐུ་གསུམ་རང་རྩལ་རྫོགས་པའི་རྟོགས་ཚད་དང་ལྡན་པར། །

Achieve the fullness of realization, the perfection of the three kāyas’ own dynamic energy –

སྐུ་ལ་རྒྱུད་སྡེའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་རྫོགས། །

Within his body all the tantric maṇḍalas are complete.

སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས་རྟེན་ཆུ་ལ་ལྕགས་ཟམ་སོགས། །

You sponsored supports of enlightened body, speech and mind,

སྐུ་མཚུངས་པ་མེད་པ།

His form is without comparison.

སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ་མཆོག་མི་འགྱུར་ནམ་མཁའི་མཚན། །

Supreme among emanations, Mingyur Namkhe Dorje;

སྐུ་རྡོ་རྗེའི་བྱིན་རླབས་ཞུགས།

The blessing of the vajra body of the buddhas infuses me,

སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས་ཡོན་ཕྲིན་ལས་བསྟོད། །

And for your body, speech, mind, qualities and activity, I offer praise.

བླ་མའི་སྐུ་ལས་བདུད་རྩིའི་རྒྱུན༔

From the guru’s body, a stream of ambrosia,

སྐུ་སྟོད་གཅེར་བ་རུས་པས་བརྒྱན༔

My upper body is naked but for ornaments of bone,

[With tantric visualizations oneself is considered to have a holy body]

མཐོན་མཐིང་རལ་པ་སིལ་བུ་སྐུ་རྒྱབ་གྲོལ། །

And his long dark blue hair falls freely at his back.

སྐུ་ལ་རས་གོས་དྲི་མ་མེད་པ་གསོལ། །

He wears a white cotton robe.
