Directional postpositions - above, below, in front, behind

Tibetan uses various postpositions to indicate directions or reference points for specific objects. Or: behind, in front, above, below. There's no shortcut to learn this with the exception of becoming familiar with these forms. However you recognize them with the second part many times having the ལ་ la or དུ་/ཏུ་ du/tu construct -- but not always, especially in verse. Note also that the postposition is after the object, not in front as in English, even if verse form sometimes takes liberties where the postposition is placed.

Here we will show examples of four directional postpositions:

• སྒང་ལ་ sgang la, སྟེང་ལ་ steng la - above, on top
• འོག་ལ་ 'og la - below
• མདུན་དུ་ / མདུན་ལ་ mdun du/la - in front
• རྒྱབ་ཏུ་ / རྒྱབ་ལ་ rgyab la - behind 

Examples: 

།ཚིག་བཤད་སེར་བུ་སྒང་ལ་འགྲིམ་མོད་དེ། 

The recited words are carried like a breeze traveling above.

འདི་ནས་སྟེང་གི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་རབ་བགྲོད་པར། །

Ascending in a direction high above here,

ཕྱོགས་མཚམས་སྟེང་འོག་སངས་རྒྱས་བྱང་སེམས་སོགས། །

In the cardinal and intermediate directions, above and below, are the budddhas and bodhisattvas, and the rest,

ཕྱོགས་མཚམས་སྟེང་འོག་ཀུན་ཏུ་ཁྱབ༔

Who pervade every direction all around, above and below.

སྟེང་དང་འོག་དང་བར་དག་དང༌། །

Above and below and in between.

སྤྱི་བོར་ཆུ་སྐྱེས་ཉི་ཟླའི་གདན་གྱི་སྟེང་། །

Above my head upon seats of lotus, sun and moon.

འབྱུང་བ་རིམ་བརྩེགས་རི་རབ་སྟེང་༔

The elements are assembled one above the other, with Mount Meru at the top.

སྟེང་དང་འོག་ཏུ་ལྟ་བ་ཐང་རེ་ཆད༔

How tiresome is this view of upper and lower!

ལས་རབ་གླིང་པས་ཀ་རོན་བྲག་དཀར་རྫ་མདུན་དུ་བྲིས་པ་དགེ། མངྒ་ལཾ།།

Lerab Lingpa set this down in front of the white rocks of Karon.

རང་མདུན་ནམ་མཁར་འཇའ་འོད་ཀློང་། །

In the sky before me, amidst an expanse of rainbow colored light,

མདུན་དུ་མངོན་པར་སྡང་བྱེད་ཀྱི་དགྲ་བ་ོདང་། 

In front of you are all your angry enemies. 

།མདུན་དུ་སྣང་བ་མཐའ་ཡས་བསྒོམ། 

Visualize Amitābha before you,

སྟོང་པའི་ངང་ལས་མདུན་གྱི་རྟེན༔

Out of emptiness arises the front visualization.

རྒྱབ་བྲག་ཕུག་ཞིག་ལ་གཏད་ནས། 

and a cave behind. 

ཞི་འཛུམ་ཟླ་བའི་རྒྱབ་ཡོལ་ཅན། །

She smiles serenely, with a moon behind her.

མཐོན་མཐིང་རལ་པ་སིལ་བུ་སྐུ་རྒྱབ་གྲོལ། །

And his long dark blue hair falls freely at his back.

རྒྱབ་ཏུ་གསུང་རབ་གླེགས་བམ་རྣམ་པ་ཅན། །

Behind is the word of the Buddha in the form of scriptures.

དྲི་མེད་ཟླ་བར་རྒྱབ་བརྟེན་པ། །

And a stainless moon supports him at his back.
